Burlington Northern and Santa Fe

Fort Worth is the headquarters for the BNSF Railway, the second-largest freight railroad network in North America. BNSF also has a major intermodal facility, just North of Fort Worth in Alliance. According to corporate press releases, the BNSF Railway is among the top transporters of intermodal freight in North America. The railroad hauls enough coal to generate roughly ten percent of the electricity produced in the United States.

In 2010, BNSF became a wholly owned subsidiary of Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. In 2013, BNSF has made news with major policy changes. On January 15th BNSF Railway Co. signed an accord with the US Labor Department and OSHA regarding employee safety and injury practices under Federal Railroad Safety Act. And on March 6th, 2013 BNSF announced that they would test liquefied natural gas as an alternative to diesel for locomotives.

Amtrak

The Fort Worth Amtrak station is located at the Fort Worth Intermodal Transportation Center, 1001 Jones Street, Fort Worth, TX 76102. The two major routes are the Texas Eagle, which runs from Chicago through Fort Worth to San Antonio and the Heartland Flyer which connects Fort Worth and Oklahoma City.

Trinity Railroad Express

The Trinity Railway Express is a commuter rail line in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex that connects Fort Worth to Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) It was established by an interlocal agreement between DART and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T). Each transit authority owns a 50% stake in the joint rail project. Contractor Herzog Transit Services operates the line. The TRE links downtown Fort Worth, downtown Dallas and DFW Airport. Scheduled train service is provided Monday through Saturday. No service is available on Sunday. The TRE began operating in December, 1996. The TRE commuter line has a daily ridership of 9,800 which makes it the fourteenth most-ridden commuter rail system in the country. Annual ridership on the TRE exceeds two and a half million persons.

Union Pacific

Union Pacific is the corporate heir to the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific railroad systems among others. As such, they have been operating in Fort Worth since before the turn of the last century. Today UP builds trains in Fort Worth at Davidson Yard.
